Lintran- Encouragement To Young Handlers

Below is a short story from Junior Gundog Handler Sam Smith and his dog Madge.

“How I started age 10…..There was a litter of 4 week old black lab pups when I went to say a sad goodbye to my pony as we had put her out on loan to some friends and she had developed a brain tumour. I begged Dad to let me choose a puppy. I was told I would have to train her… I called her Black Magic, aka Madge. We attended a local dog training class and it was there I discovered gun dog training. I was then lucky enough to have some lessons with Janet Webb who helped me fix my bad habits and taught me how to become a better handler. Madge is now 3 years old and I am 13.

We have won the Lintran junior handler for the last 2 years and have recently joined the Leicestershire Gundog Club, where we came 2nd in our first novice handler novice dog KC working test. Madge and I also qualified last year for the Midland Game Fair Chudleys Junior Gundog championships after coming 3rd at Knebworth.

My aim now is to win a novice test with Madge so I can compete in an open test and eventually have a go at a field trial and, of course, I hope to fit in as much picking up this season as I can!”

We would like to wish Sam and his dog Madge all the best for the future.
